Preparations for the 2027 Census are progressing across various Indian regions. In Uttarakhand, the self-enumeration process was scheduled to begin on November 16, with the formal census period running from December 1 to January 4. The Ministry of Home Affairs has officially notified the nationwide schedule for the Census of India 2027, marking the first official population count since 2011. The house-to-house Union Cabinet has approved Rs 11,718 crore for the operation, which will be conducted in two phases: house listing and population enumeration. The nationwide house-to-house enumeration is set for January 25 to February 28, 2027, across most states and union territories. This follows following a self-enumeration period via an online portal from January 10 to January 24, 2027. A revisional round to verify and correct data is scheduled for March 1 to March 5, 2027, with the official reference date set for midnight on March 1, 2027. In Delhi, the second phase is expected to begin on January 10, 2027. This phase includes the 15-day self-enumeration window, followed by field operations from January 25 to February 28, and a revisional round in early March. The first phase in Delhi concluded on June 14, covering approximately 76 lakh houses and 55 lakh households. For the first time since 1931, data on caste will be captured alongside parameters such as religion, migration, education, occupation, nationality, disability, and mother tongue. While identification details like Aadhaar, voter ID, or passport numbers may be requested, providing Aadhaar information remains voluntary. Certain regions are excluded from the initial nationwide schedule. States with upcoming assembly elections, including Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Manipur, will conduct their census at a later date. In these poll-bound states, self-enumeration is scheduled to begin earlier, on November 16, 2026, with door-to-door counting starting December 1, 2026. Additionally, snow-bound or non-synchronous areas in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh are exempt from the current timeline due to winter accessibility challenges.
