India aerospace and aviation sector development
Overview
India is positioning itself as a significant hub within the global aerospace and aviation sectors. The country is emerging as a key player in the aerospace supply chain, driven by a large pool of trained engineers, favorable government policies, and machining costs that are reportedly 30% to 50% lower than in China. This shift occurs as Western manufacturers seek to mitigate labor shortages and rising costs.
Simultaneously, domestic civil aviation demand is growing faster than available airline capacity. To support the goal of becoming the world’s third-largest aviation market, the Indian government is executing an extensive airport expansion programme. The number of operational airports has increased from 74 in 2014 to over 166, with a long-term target of reaching 400 airports by 2047. Regional connectivity has also been bolstered by the UDAN scheme, which has received recognition from the International Air Transport Association.
