In mid-October 2026, two Bangladeshi police officers, Assistant Sub-Inspector Imran Hossain and Constable Rohit Dewan, were returned to Bangladesh after accidentally crossing the border into India during a drug raid near the Ashabari-Rahimpur border. The handover was conducted peacefully following a flag meeting between the Border Guard Bangladesh and the Border Security Force. By early November 2026, tensions escalated in the Sepahijala district when a mob allegedly attacked Border Security Force personnel. The incident reportedly began on November 2 after soldiers from the 49th Battalion detained an individual, identified as Hefzur Rahman, on suspicion of smuggling during vegetation clearance near the Ashabari Border Outpost. Following the detention, a crowd of villagers reportedly blocked the Boxanagar-Rahimpur road. The situation escalated into a physical assault where the mob, armed with sticks, rods, and bamboo, allegedly attacked a BSF vehicle and attempted to seize service weapons. The assault resulted in injuries to Assistant Commandant Rohit Kumar and three other personnel, who were transported to a local health centre. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha condemned the violence as “unacceptable” and a “matter of grave concern,” calling for swift and stringent legal action. Following the unrest, Tripura police arrested several individuals, including three women. By November 6, the total number of arrests related to the incident rose to 18. 21. Among those detained are prime suspects Hasina Begum and her sons, Rabiul Hossain and Mahabul Hossain, who were reportedly identified through electronic evidence and viral video footage. The suspects face charges including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. Chief Minister Saha held a high-level security review meeting with officials from the state administration, police, BSF, CRPF, and Assam Rifles, emphasizing has maintained a zero-tolerance policy toward cross-border smuggling.
