India and Canada have commenced the fifth round of negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in Ottawa. Running from October 5 to 9, these discussions follow a meeting between Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Canadian International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu during the G20 trade ministers' meeting in Milwaukee. The negotiations aim to finalize the trade deal by the end of 2025 or early 2026, with both nations working toward strengthening economic ties following recent diplomatic tensions. The two countries are identifying opportunities for deep cooperation in sectors including energy, critical minerals, aerospace, and artificial intelligence. Bilateral trade in goods and services reached $30.4 billion in 2025. The Canadian government maintains a target to double this figure to $70 billion annually by 2030. Following the Ottawa talks, Minister Sidhu is leading a 300-member trade mission to India, marking the largest Canadian delegation to the country in over 30 years. The mission includes stops in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru to deepen commercial ties and advance CEPA negotiations, which both nations are now targeting to conclude by the end of the year. The delegation represents sectors such as aerospace, clean technology, energy transition, information and communication technology, life sciences, agri-food, and forestry. Diplomatic engagement has intensified, highlighted by a telephonic discussion between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the Strategic Partnership, focusing on trade, security, and technology. Additionally, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand is visiting New Delhi to advance bilateral priorities with India's External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar. Negotiations for the CEPA have since accelerated, with officials now aiming to finalize the pact by November. Indian High Commissioner Dinesh K.
