India carbon credit market development and recognition

Overview

India is advancing its Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS) to create a regulated framework where companies can trade credits earned through emission reductions. This system aims to turn pollution reduction into a financial asset.

In tandem with these regulatory developments, new methodologies have been introduced to generate carbon credits from recycling end-of-life vehicles, quantifying the greenhouse gas reductions achieved by recovering materials. This expansion addresses the projected growth of end-of-life vehicles in India, which is expected to reach nearly 50 million by 2030.

On an international level, the United Kingdom has officially recognized India’s CCTS as a qualifying carbon pricing mechanism under its Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). This recognition allows UK importers of eligible Indian goods to seek carbon price relief to prevent the imposition of double carbon costs, provided they meet specific UK legal verification requirements.
