India’s Project Cheetah has reached a milestone with the birth of four new cubs at Kuno National Park, bringing the total cheetah population in the country to 56. The cubs were born to KGP12, a female cheetah born in India, marking a successful second-generation breeding event for the reintroduction programme. Of the total population, 36 cheetahs have been born in India. In addition to the population growth, conservation efforts have expanded through the transfer of a female cheetah named ‘Radha’ (CCB-2) from Kuno National Park to the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary in Neemuch. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav oversaw the release of CCB2, noting that the cheetah, originally brought from Botswana, has successfully adapted to Indian environmental conditions. This release brings the cheetah population in the Gandisagar sanctuary to four, consisting of two males and two females. The expansion aims to bolster breeding potential and re-establish the species' life cycle in the region after a century-long absence. The Chief Minister highlighted that the project has also contributed to local employment and economic shifts in surrounding areas. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav previously described the recent births as “a truly historic and joyous moment,” signaling the project’s transition ~~from an initial adaptation phase~~ toward population consolidation.
