The Indian men's cricket team has arrived in Christchurch to commence a multi-format tour of New Zealand, beginning with a five-match T20I series. The opening match commenced on October 22, 2026, at Hagley Oval. Indian captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first. In the first match, New Zealand posted a total of 225/8, marking their highest score in home T20Is. The innings was driven by an unbeaten 82 from Glenn Phillips, alongside aggressive starts from Finn Allen and Tim Seifert. The Indian bowling attack, featuring Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav, and Axar Patel, managed to secure key wickets to keep the total within reach, though Axar Patel conceded 51 runs. Chasing a target of 226, India secured a four-wicket victory, achieving their highest successful run chase in T20I history by reaching 230/6 with two balls to spare. Sanju Samson led the pursuit with 67 off 33 balls, supported by an explosive 29 from Abhishek Sharma during a 93-run opening stand. Following a middle-order collapse triggered by the spin of Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell, Shreyas Iyer (42) and Naman Dhir (42 not out) stabilized the innings to seal the win. Dhir secured the victory with a six in the final over. India now holds a 1-0 lead in the series. As the tour progresses to the second T20I at Hagley Oval, India is set to play its 300th T20I match, a milestone previously reached only by Pakistan. Speculation ~~exists~~ remains regarding the potential return of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to the playing XI to replace Ishan Kishan, who is sidelined with a “low-grade right adductor strain.” If selected, India may utilize two left-handed openers, Abhishek Sharma and Sooryavanshi, while moving Sanju Samson to the number three position.
