India domestic defense manufacturing advancements

Overview

India has achieved significant milestones in domestic defense manufacturing, specifically within the aerospace and naval sectors.

In the aerospace sector, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) reached a milestone with the delivery of its 2,000th aero-engine, including the AL-31FP engine for Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jets. To support indigenous helicopter platforms, HAL is investing Rs 218 crore to establish a second production line for Shakti engines, aiming to increase annual capacity from 80 to 180 engines.

In naval developments, Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) launched the INS Surya (FSS-1), the Indian Navy’s first indigenous Fleet Support Ship. The 43,500-tonne vessel is designed to provide at-sea replenishment and logistics to extend operational reach in the Indian Ocean Region. Following the launch, the keel for the fifth Fleet Support Ship (FSS-5) was laid. Other maritime advancements include the laying of the keel for the first Next Generation Missile Vessel (NGMV) at Cochin Shipyard Limited and the commissioning of the INS Nipun, a diving support vessel for submarine rescue operations.
