India is implementing large-scale energy infrastructure and transition programs to enhance energy security and meet climate goals. Initial efforts focused on accelerating coal gasification through the National Coal Gasification Mission. This includes a Rs. 37,500-crore scheme to promote surface coal and lignite gasification, aiming to process 100 million tonnes by 2030. A key driver is Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited (BCGCL), a joint venture between Coal India Limited and BHEL. The Union Cabinet approved the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III (GEC-III) with an outlay of Rs 1,86,405 crore to strengthen power transmission for up to 135 GW of renewable energy. This programme includes approximately ₹1,36,378 crore for transmission systems and ₹50,000 crore for 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to improve grid flexibility, with a target completion by FY 2032-33. The GEC-III also includes ₹54,082 crore in Central Financial Support to help lower power costs. Additionally, the GOBARdhan National Unified Scheme for Compressed Biogas (CBG), valued at ₹23,731 crore, aims to increase domestic compressed biogas production nearly ten-fold through FY 2035-36. The scheme, scheduled for implementation from FY 2026-27, establishes a stable administered price of ₹2,110 per MMBTU to provide long-term revenue visibility for producers and integrates the CBG value chain under a unified national framework. framework, including provisions for City Gas Distribution entities to meet blending obligations.
