The system provides retirement savings, life insurance through the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) scheme, and lifelong monthly pensions via the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS-95). In September 2026, the Indian Union Cabinet approved an increase to the mandatory wage ceiling for compulsory EPFO coverage. The monthly wage limit will rise from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000, marking the first such adjustment since September 2014. This change is expected to bring over between 51 lakh and 1 crore additional employees into the social security framework, providing them with access to provident fund savings, pension protection, and insurance. The government estimated stated the move reflects sustained wage growth and the expansion of formal employment. Implementation is scheduled to begin on September 17. The annual budgetary impact of this expansion to be is estimated at approximately Rs 11,339 crore. crore, with a total projected cost of Rs 56,696 crore over a five-year period.
