India’s healthcare sector is experiencing a dual evolution of systemic government reforms and rapid private sector expansion. Initially, the focus has been on improving rural healthcare through the National Health Mission, which provides free medicines and diagnostics at sub-health centres and district hospitals. This period is also marked by a rise in health-tech entrepreneurship, supported by venture capital and government initiatives like the National Digital Health Mission.

As the sector grows, the focus has shifted toward the implications of massive private investment. While significant capital—including a $1 billion IPO by Manipal Health and over $30 billion in mergers and acquisitions—has increased hospital capacity, it has also intensified scrutiny regarding affordability. Reports of price discrepancies have led the Association of Healthcare Providers of India (AHPI) to clarify that manufacturers, not hospitals, set the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) for medical products. Data highlights a widening cost gap, with out-of-pocket expenses in private facilities reaching approximately 7.6 times higher than in government hospitals for general hospitalization, and even higher for specialized treatments such as cancer care.
