India higher education employability and faculty crisis

India’s higher education system is facing a growing crisis characterized by a disconnect between academic credentials and labor market needs. Early reports highlighted a debate over the utility of conventional degrees versus practical skills, noting that while Computer Science graduates show high employability, those in Arts and Humanities face significantly lower rates. High unemployment among the 15–25 age demographic was also a primary concern.

Subsequent developments have emphasized a fundamental mismatch in the workforce, with reports indicating that only 8.25% of graduates are employed in roles aligned with their specific qualifications. Unemployment rates among educated youth, particularly females, remain notably higher than the national average.

Beyond student employability, the crisis has expanded to include the exploitation of academic professionals. Highly qualified scholars face low pay, excessive workloads, and job insecurity, leading to concerns that the treatment of knowledge creators as “cheap labor” may hinder India’s goals of becoming a global knowledge economy.
