India industrial manufacturing and supply chain initiatives
Overview
India has initiated several industrial programs to strengthen domestic manufacturing and reduce import dependencies. This includes a ₹10,000-crore Container Manufacturing Assistance Scheme (CMAS) designed to build a domestic shipping container industry with a target capacity of 1 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) annually over the next decade.
Parallel to the container initiative, the government is working to establish a domestic rare-earth magnet manufacturing ecosystem through a ₹7,280-crore incentive scheme. This effort aims to mitigate a heavy reliance on China, which currently supplies 85 to 90 percent of India’s rare-earth magnets. The magnet initiative faces hurdles such as Chinese export controls on specialized machinery and difficulties in securing heavy rare earth elements like terbium and dysprosium.
Following the announcement of the magnet scheme, the Ministry of Heavy Industries received 20 bids via a global tender for the Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnet (REPM). The program seeks to establish a domestic manufacturing capacity of 6,000 Metric Tons Per Annum (MTPA) across five selected beneficiaries. The goal is to build a complete value chain to support critical sectors including electric vehicles, aerospace, defense, and wind turbines.
