India and Kuwait have engaged in diplomatic and humanitarian cooperation to strengthen bilateral ties. Initial discussions between Indian Ambassador Paramita Tripathi and Kuwait’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Osama Khaled Abdullah Bodai, focused on enhancing trade, industry, and economic sectors, specifically targeting food security and supply chain resilience. These economic efforts follow high-level strategic reviews involving Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, which addressed energy, defense, technology, and maritime security. The role of India’s Global Capability Centers in fields like artificial intelligence and cybersecurity was also identified as a potential bridge for business between India and the Gulf region. Complementing these economic ties, Kuwaiti Ambassador Meshal Al-Shimali highlighted humanitarian collaboration in India. Volunteers from Kuwait and other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, including Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, have been working on joint relief initiatives and humanitarian projects to meet the needs of local communities. Building on these foundations, the two nations have deepened their strategic partnership, specifically through the inaugural meeting of the India-Kuwait Joint Defence Committee (JDC) in New Delhi. Officials agreed to strengthen cooperation in military training, exercises, medical services, staff talks, and research and development. This increased engagement follows a memorandum of understanding signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kuwait in December 2024. Experts view this expansion of defense ties as part of a strategy by Kuwait to diversify security partnerships amid regional volatility. The relationship remains underpinned by significant social ties, as the Indian diaspora comprises over one million people, representing approximately 21% of Kuwait’s population and 30% of its workforce.
