The Indian Union government has lowered the qualifying cut-off scores for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Master of Dental Surgery (NEET-MDS) 2026 for the second year in a row. This adjustment, which involves a reduction of 20.576 percentile points across various categories, follows reports of approximately 1,200 vacant postgraduate dental seats nationwide. As the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) released the Round 3 schedule for NEET MDS 2026 counselling, attention has also turned to the NEET-UG 2026 cycle. Tamil Nadu Rajya Sabha MP P Wilson has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene regarding high vacancy rates in undergraduate medical programs. Wilson noted that over 4,000 medical seats remain vacant and suggested a reduction in the minimum qualifying percentile and the implementation of a special stray vacancy round to ensure seats are utilized. Following the implementation of a stray vacancy round intended to fill 4,068 vacant MBBS, BDS, and B.Sc. Nursing seats, the MCC released revised provisional allotment results showing that only 3,108 seats were filled, leaving over 800 positions unoccupied. MP P Wilson has reiterated his call for the Prime Minister to intervene by reducing the minimum qualifying percentile for the 2026–27 academic year. Wilson attributed the high number of unfilled seats to a high qualifying cut-off resulting from an answer sheet leak and the subsequent re-conduct of the exam. Regarding the NEET MDS 2026 cycle, the MCC has scheduled seat matrix verification for October 21, with registration and payment occurring from October 22 to 27. Choice filling is set to continue through October 28, with allotment results expected on October 31.
