Discussions regarding the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) have focused on bilateral maritime cooperation and potential regional expansion. In late September 2026, Greek and Israeli officials met to discuss strengthening ties in shipping, technology, and security. Greek Minister of Maritime Affairs Vasilis Kikilias described IMEC as a ‘very ambitious plan,’ expressing interest in a route that connects Israel to Greek ports to reach the Atlantic coast. This connection is viewed as a way to provide ‘new dynamics to shipping, commodities, and the economy.’ By early October 2026, interest in the multimodal connectivity project grew among several other nations. Gérard Mestrallet, the French President’s Special Envoy for IMEC, noted that Egypt, Lebanon, and Oman have expressed interest in the Middle Eastern portion of the corridor, while Greece and Cyprus are seeking full membership in Europe. Any enlargement requires approval from the eight original signatory governments: India, the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, France, Germany, Italy, and the European Union. During the ‘Sagarmanthan: The Great Oceans Dialogue 2026’ in New Delhi, Greek Deputy Minister of Shipping and Insular Policy Stefanos Gikas held meetings to discuss Greece’s potential role in IMEC. Gikas emphasized that Greek ports could serve as vital gateways for Indian goods entering the European market. Discussions with Indian Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur also explored the possibility of Indian investments in Greek port infrastructure. Additionally, Gikas met with Indian Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh to reaffirm commitments to a strategic defense partnership. In Limassol, Cyprus, Italian and Cypriot delegations met to discuss port investments and IMEC. Supported by DP World and the Italian Trade Agency, the talks covered maritime corridors, terminal management, and shipping compliance, highlighting the economic significance of the shipping sector in Cyprus.
