India MSME support and export drive
Overview
In June 2026 the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Industry highlighted MSMEs’ outsized role – about 48.5 % of exports, 31.1 % of GDP and 35.4 % of manufacturing output – and urged formalisation so firms can access credit. Registration on the Udyam portal had passed 7.9 crore enterprises.
In early July Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi pressed banks to widen MSME credit, outlining five pillars – technology, credit, skill development, market access and infrastructure – and announced the Green Investment and Finance and Technology (GIFT) scheme, Industry 4.0 centres, a National Institute for MSMEs and an Export Centre in Hyderabad, together with export‑fee reimbursements and use of FTAs and BRICS ties.
A week later Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman warned that roughly 2.3 crore MSMEs remain under‑financed, representing about 60 % of a ₹43 trillion credit gap. She linked affordable credit to higher productivity, job creation and inclusive GDP growth, citing more than 2.4 lakh recognised startups that have generated over 23 lakh jobs and stressing AI adoption in agriculture and food processing.
In August the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) reported a three‑fold rise in direct MSME lending to ₹24,323 crore in FY 2025‑26 and a 36.8 % year‑on‑year portfolio increase to ₹51,687 crore. The bank is opening 71 new branches, expanding co‑lending with non‑bank lenders, launching the Prayaas Scheme for informal micro‑entrepreneurs, the GST Sahay digital invoicing app, and the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme 5.0 to provide additional guaranteed credit.
Together, parliamentary scrutiny, ministerial programmes, fiscal policy emphasis and expanded bank financing illustrate a coordinated push to formalise, finance, modernise and export‑orient India’s MSME sector.
