India-Pakistan diplomatic standoff at UNGA

During the United Nations General Assembly, India issued a rebuttal to remarks made by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Indian diplomat Petal Gahlot, First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of India, exercised the ‘right of reply’ to address several issues regarding Pakistan’s governance and security.

Gahlot criticized the Pakistani government, characterizing it as a ‘Form 47 government’ and a regime ruled ‘by the military, for the military, and of the military’ rather than through democratic institutions. She specifically referenced the 27th Amendment and alleged that true power resides with the military.

On the issue of security, India accused Pakistan of sponsoring cross-border terrorism and highlighted the hypocrisy of its leadership, noting that Osama bin Laden lived near a major Pakistani military academy. Additionally, Gahlot addressed religious intolerance and the treatment of minorities under blasphemy laws. Regarding territorial disputes, India dismissed Pakistan’s claims concerning Jammu and Kashmir, asserting the region is an ‘inseparable part’ of India and urging the Assembly to focus on the human rights situation in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
