Following a terror attack in the Pahalgam region of Kashmir, India conducted a military response known as ‘Operation Sindoor’ (also referred to as ‘Operation Sindhu’). Former Indian Army Chief Anil Sachdev revealed that during the planning stages in May, the Indian Air Force considered striking Pakistan’s Skardu military base. Skardu was identified as a strategic target due to its proximity to the Line of Control and its role in protecting Chinese infrastructure, though the strike was ultimately aborted due to deteriorating weather conditions. Regarding the actual execution of the operation, former Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan clarified that an Indian loitering munition likely struck Pakistan’s Kirana Hills unintentionally. Chauhan stated explained that the munition, which had an operational flight time of approximately two hours, was searching for radar systems near Sargodha, Sargodha. After failing to locate its targets, the munition likely ran out of fuel and descended into the hills, a site often associated with Pakistani nuclear facilities. He further This explanation addresses speculation following Pakistani media reports of smoke in the area. Chauhan also noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had granted the military ‘complete freedom of action’ during the operation. Chauhan’s remarks have sparked political controversy in India. His admission that a munition ‘must have come and hit one of those hills’ contradicts the May 2025 position of Indian officials who denied any strikes in the area to avoid implications regarding nuclear installations. In response, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh questioned the consistency of these disclosures, accusing the government of attempting to ‘change the narrative’ and questioning the administration’s stance on China.
