The Indian government convened the ‘National Conference on Agriculture for Rabi Campaign 2026’ in New Delhi to coordinate agricultural strategies between the Centre and various states. The conference, inaugurated by Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, focused on enhancing productivity, sustainability, and farmer incomes through themes such as digital agriculture, climate-resilient practices, and missions for pulses, oilseeds, and oil palm. During the proceedings, Minister Chouhan emphasized the necessity of aligning Rabi crop planning with local water availability and soil moisture levels. He cautioned against planting water-intensive crops in areas lacking adequate irrigation to prevent significant losses. To address climate change and erratic rainfall, the Minister requested that states and districts prepare water budgets, specifically noting drought concerns in Maharashtra and Karnataka. Central teams are scheduled to visit these regions for ground assessments. Mangi Lal Jat, Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), stated that the goal is to collaborate with states to develop action plans tailored to local conditions, ensuring farmers have timely access to seeds, crops, and fertilizers. The conference also addressed the pursuit of self-reliance in oilseeds, pulses, and fertilizers. To manage costs and soil health, fertilizer use recommendations have been revised at the district level to promote balanced application. Jat noted that recent crises in West Asia have increased the government’s fertilizer subsidy burden, making the efficient and judicious use of resources even more critical.
