India RBI polymer banknote pilot – trials approved

Entities: Reserve Bank of India · polymer banknote · India · Pankaj Chaudhary · Ministry of Finance, Government of India

Overview

Following the RBI’s July 2026 announcement of a polymer banknote pilot, the Indian government approved the programme on 27 July. The RBI will print one billion ₹10 and one billion ₹20 polymer notes for field trials, while existing cotton‑paper notes will continue to be legal tender. The trial seeks to confirm that polymer notes last two to four times longer, resist water, dirt and wear, and incorporate advanced security features such as clear windows, metallic numerals, magnetic threads, holographic elements and colour‑changing effects. Officials expect the polymer series to cut replacement costs, reduce waste and enhance counterfeit resistance. The Finance Ministry stressed that polymer and paper notes will circulate together and that any impact on digital payments will be monitored. Pending successful trials, a broader rollout could commence in 2027, with substrate procurement already underway under strict security rules that exclude China and Pakistan.
