India sports governance and doping crisis

India is addressing systemic challenges within its sports ecosystem, specifically regarding coaching shortages and a rising doping crisis.

In early August 2026, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports highlighted a significant coaching deficit, reporting 554 vacant posts within the Sports Authority of India. During the National Sports Federation Conclave, officials emphasized the need for transparent selection trials and stronger anti-doping mechanisms to prepare for upcoming international competitions.

By late August 2026, the scale of the doping issue became more apparent. Data revealed a steady increase in positive tests, rising from 125 in 2022 to 260 in 2024. This trend led the Athletics Integrity Unit to classify Indian athletics as an “extremely high” doping risk in April 2026, resulting in stricter testing and the loss of athlete quotas for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The crisis has specifically impacted wrestling, with athletes Mukul Dahiya and Deepanshu removed from the national squad following doping violations. In response to these developments, the Indian government has proposed expanding testing protocols and introducing criminal penalties for those involved in organized doping activities, including traffickers and support personnel.
