Overview

India is pursuing significant expansion and infrastructure development within its steel and mining sectors. Initially, the Indian Ferro Alloy Producers’ Association (IFAPA) highlighted that the domestic ferro-alloys sector is poised for growth driven by a steel industry that reached approximately 165 million tonnes of crude production in 2025. To support the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ vision, industry leaders emphasized the need to secure indigenous sources of critical raw materials like manganese and chromium.

Building on these growth trends, the Ministry of Steel has announced a long-term policy to increase steelmaking capacity to 600 million metric tons by 2047, with a focus on reducing carbon emission intensity. To support this capacity, NMDC Ltd has commissioned a Rs 5,427-crore integrated iron ore project in Chhattisgarh, featuring a pellet plant and a 135 km slurry pipeline to streamline concentrate transport. Additionally, the government is establishing the Steel Industry Safety Council (SISC) to improve safety standards across the sector.
