India UDAN regional aviation expansion

Entities: Uttar Pradesh · Ministry of Civil Aviation (India) · Bokaro Airport · Murlidhar Mohol · Dumka Airport

Overview

In July 2026 the government confirmed the five‑year, tapered financial support for airlines under UDAN, maintaining the Rs 29,000 crore ten‑year outlay and noting the record May domestic traffic of 1.5 crore passengers. Later that month the Directorate General of Civil Aviation began reviewing commercial operation approvals for the newly completed Bokaro and Dumka airports in Jharkhand, where Rs 122.04 crore has been allocated and Rs 117.61 crore spent. Work continues at Hazaribagh and Daltonganj pending land acquisition. In Uttar Pradesh, 34 UDAN routes were withdrawn for failing viability targets, leaving 348 of the 679 launched routes operational; penalties were imposed in 14 cases of under‑performance. The second phase of UDAN was launched with a Rs 28,840 crore budget, including Rs 3,661 crore earmarked for 200 heliports in hilly and aspirational regions. These actions extend the programme’s rollout while addressing economic sustainability and infrastructure gaps.
