Following strong performances in the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League, Naman Dhir was selected for India’s One Day International (ODI) series against the West Indies. Former cricketer Irfan Pathan noted that while Dhir is a talented batter, his inclusion was likely motivated by his off-spin bowling utility, which is needed due to the unavailability of Washington Sundar and injury concerns regarding Riyan Parag. In the opening match of the three-game series held at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, Dhir made his international debut. India captain debut, becoming India’s 264th ODI player. Captain Shubman Gill confirmed a lineup presented Dhir with his debut cap. The 26-year-old batting all-rounder, who plays for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL, noted that included he had only learned of his selection the previous evening. During the first innings, the West Indies posted a score of 295/7. Dhir alongside spin options Ravindra Jadeja contributed as a part-time off-spinner, bowling five overs and Kuldeep Yadav. conceding 33 runs. While his presence provides batting depth, some analysts have questioned the decision to select an additional all-rounder instead of a specialist frontline bowler. During the subsequent run chase, veteran opener Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 32 runs by Alzarri Joseph; former cricketer Dinesh Karthik commented that fans should “remain patient” with the veteran batter. The series serves as preparation for the 2027 Men’s ODI World Cup.
