Overview

Seven years after the revocation of Articles 370 and 35A, the region shows a mixed picture of security gains and lingering human‑rights concerns. Activist Taslima Akhtar’s data still cite a drop in terrorist incidents from 228 in 2018 to 44 in 2023 and civilian deaths from 55 to 13, confirming the trend of reduced militancy noted in earlier reports. Investment applications total Rs 1.69 lakh crore, with 1,984 industrial units attracting Rs 9,606 crore and generating 63,710 direct jobs. Start‑up registrations have risen to 917 firms, including 333 women‑led ventures.

In August 2026 the Union Territory marked the seventh anniversary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and officials hailed the change as a “decisive new chapter,” emphasizing infrastructure, education, health, tourism and sports projects. BJP leader Ashok Koul said daily life was now unhindered, while Modi claimed wide‑ranging improvements in entrepreneurship and sports. Opposition parties – the PDP led by Mehbooba Mufti, the National Conference and the Awami Ittehad Party – staged candle‑light protests, sit‑ins and declared the day a “Black Day”; Mufti announced she would spend the night at the PDP headquarters.

Security forces kept heightened deployments: multi‑layered checkpoints, intensified vehicle checks on the Jammu‑Srinagar highway, border and Line‑of‑Control patrols, quick‑response teams and bomb‑disposal squads. As a precaution, the Shri Amarnath Yatra and pilgrim convoys were suspended. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha handed appointment letters to families of militancy victims. The anniversary therefore combined heightened security, political dissent and competing narratives about development since the 2019 constitutional change.
