Indian advancements in neurodegenerative disease diagnostics
Overview
Researchers in India have developed new diagnostic technologies for the detection of neurodegenerative diseases.
In late August 2026, scientists at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) introduced a smartphone-based platform for detecting amyloid-beta, a biomarker for Alzheimer’s disease. The system, named ADxFluor, uses a fluorescent probe called TZ-48 to allow for rapid, quantitative measurement via a smartphone-integrated application. This method aims to provide a more accessible and scalable alternative to expensive infrastructure like PET scans or MRI.
Shortly thereafter, researchers at the BRIC-Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology announced the development of self-assembling synthetic nanopore sensors. Published in Nature Nanotechnology, this technology uses programmable molecular tunnels to distinguish between healthy and mutated proteins in real time. These sensors can adjust their diameter to analyze specific proteins, such as α-synuclein for Parkinson’s or peptides linked to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), offering nanomolar sensitivity for early disease detection.
