The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), representing over 90 per cent of India’s banking workforce, has scheduled a series of nationwide strikes to address unresolved labor disputes. The unions are demanding the implementation of a five-day working week, a review of the Performance-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, and the settlement of pending pension-related matters. matters, including the desire for employees to opt for the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). The planned industrial actions include a one-day strike on September 11, a three-day strike from September 28 to 30, and a potential indefinite strike beginning October 26, 2026. On September 11, bank employees initiated the nationwide strike. The action has caused significant disruptions to physical branch operations, specifically affecting cash deposits, withdrawals, and cheque clearances, particularly within public sector banks. While digital banking services such as UPI, mobile banking, and ATMs have remained functional, in-person services faced substantial interruptions. As previously noted, regional factors such as the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in Delhi and Municipal Corporation elections in Jaipur, combined with subsequent holidays and Ganesh Chaturthi, contributed to a period of interrupted service availability.
