India’s buffalo meat export sector reached a significant milestone in the 2025-26 fiscal year, with exports totaling $5.1 billion. This represents a 25.6% growth, marking the first time the sector has exceeded the $5 billion threshold. Growth has been supported by both increased volume and a rise in average export value per tonne, as efforts continue to position the product as a premium global brand. In the first half of 2026, Vietnam imported over 108,000 tons of meat from India, valued at nearly $463 million, with frozen buffalo meat serving as the primary component. This high volume is driven by competitive pricing and a domestic buffalo population that meets only about half of local demand. However, this trade has been linked to food fraud investigations in Vietnam. Authorities reported instances where imported Indian buffalo meat was falsely marketed on social media as a local Northwest specialty dried buffalo meat. Recent investigations in Dong Nai province uncovered a ring involving Tran Le Foods that processed imported buffalo meat into products sold as beef jerky.
