Indian government crackdown on Firebase-hosted phishing

Overview

The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has directed Google to shut down hundreds of Firebase accounts and remove at least 57 websites and databases used to facilitate phishing attacks and distribute malware.

Authorities identified that these resources were used to impersonate major financial institutions, including State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank, as well as the state-run PM-KISAN farmer-payment program. Scammers utilized these sites to steal sensitive information, such as credit card details and one-time passwords (OTPs), often by luring victims with promises of rewards or increased credit limits. Some schemes involved camouflaged Android malware disguised as legitimate banking applications.

These enforcement actions follow reports of significant economic losses due to digital crime in India. Data indicates that users lost approximately 22,500 crore rupees to digital fraud in 2025, contributing to cumulative losses of 52,000 crore rupees over a five-year period.
