Indian government pension scheme developments

Overview

India is managing various pension schemes for its workforce, including the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) and the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS-95).

As of July 2026, approximately 118,000 central government employees had enrolled in the UPS, which was launched in April 2025. The scheme guarantees a minimum monthly pension of Rs 10,000 and at least 50% of the last salary. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman noted that a one-time “one-way switch” allows employees to revert to the National Pension System if they choose.

Separately, the government addressed demands to increase the minimum monthly pension under the EPS-95 from ₹1,000 to ₹7,500. In response to inquiries in the Lok Sabha following nationwide protests by the EPS-95 National Agitation Committee, Minister of State for Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje confirmed that the current minimum remains ₹1,000. The government stated it provides special budgetary assistance to maintain this level while prioritizing the “long-term sustainability of the pension fund and future liabilities.”
