The Indian government has implemented various financial support measures to bolster the nation's sporting ecosystem. At the regional level, the Delhi government approved Rs 9.75 crore in aid for 123 athletes, including 89 elite and 34 school-level sportspersons, under the Mukhyamantri Khel Protsahan Yojana. This funding covers coaching, nutrition, and equipment across several disciplines, including new additions such as Wushu, roller skating, kabaddi, handball, basketball, Mallakhamb, and Yogasana. In the first phase, Rs 5.85 crore will be transferred directly to verified bank accounts, with the remaining Rs 3.90 crore released upon verification of expenditure documents. On a national scale, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced a ₹7,386.74 crore outlay for the period of 2026-27 to 2030-31 through the Scheme of Assistance to National Sports Federations. Revised guidelines significantly increase financial assistance for hosting international events from ₹2 crore to a maximum of ₹50 crore to support bids for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympic Games. The scheme also introduces Olympic Training Centres designed to provide modern sports science infrastructure and reduce athlete reliance on overseas training. Additionally, the allocation for hosting National Games has been set at up to ₹50 crore. To further strengthen the sector, the Indian Union Cabinet approved the Khelo India Sports Goods Manufacturing Scheme, allocating Rs 1,856.67 crore for the period 2026 to 2033-34. This initiative aims to bolster domestic manufacturing and exports through the development of Sports Goods Manufacturing Zones (SGMZs), manufacturing incentives, and investments in research, skill development, and certification facilities. The scheme is structured into manufacturing incentives, such as turnover-linked assistance, and ecosystem strengthening through support for research, quality certification, and start-ups. While industry representatives have welcomed the move, some have noted the importance of ensuring benefits reach small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) at the grassroots level.
