Chief Justice of India Surya Kant declined requests from opposition leaders of the INDIA bloc, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, to meet regarding grievances such as alleged electoral irregularities and concerns over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The Chief Justice stated that these matters are sub judice and that meeting to discuss pending cases would contravene the ‘principle of Separation of Powers and judicial propriety.’ In response to the request, the Chief Justice emphasized that while the doors of the Supreme Court remain open to all, political parties must pursue grievances through established judicial processes rather than direct meetings. He further noted that protests and restrictions in Delhi are law and order matters that do not fall within his domain. The Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) issued a resolution backing the Chief Justice, reiterating that grievances requiring judicial resolution must be pursued through legal procedures to ensure the fair administration of justice. Tensions escalated when the Kerala unit of the Congress party issued a social media post demanding the Chief Justice’s resignation, stating: ‘Dear Surya Kant, if law and order is not your domain, resign now.’ Following the backlash, the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) removed a staff member involved, with KPCC President Sunny Joseph clarifying that the post was published without the knowledge, consent, knowledge or consultation consent of party leadership. Joseph emphasized that the message does not reflect the official stance of the KPCC and that Critics have condemned the party does not disagree with opposition's actions. Former Solicitor General Harish Salve described the impartiality of attempt to meet the judiciary. The incident drew sharp condemnation from CJI as ‘sheer foolishness,’ arguing it seeks to turn the BJP, with Union Minister Kiren Rijiju accusing Supreme Court into a ‘political pawn.’ Additionally, Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC accused the Congress of attempting using such rhetoric to undermine constitutional institutions. Both damage the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) nation's image and undermine institutions like the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) issued resolutions condemning the calls for resignation, stating such actions undermine the dignity of the office and the independence of the judiciary.
