Indian medical education regulatory oversight
Overview
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has implemented several regulatory measures to oversee medical education and faculty standards in India.
Following a Supreme Court directive regarding student welfare, the NMC ordered medical colleges to maintain updated records of student suicides and unnatural deaths. Institutions must also prioritize filling teaching, non-teaching, and administrative vacancies, submitting monthly Action Taken Reports to the commission. Additional requirements include providing 24/7 medical assistance on or near campuses and ensuring timely scholarship disbursements.
Furthering its oversight of institutional quality, the NMC mandated that all medical colleges update faculty registration numbers on the Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System. This measure aims to prevent the use of “ghost faculty” to secure seat approvals. Failure to comply with these digital attendance requirements will result in the automatic rejection of daily attendance records for teaching staff.
