Indian medical intern stipend protests

Overview

Medical interns in India have engaged in various forms of protest to demand higher monthly stipends. In Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, Ayurveda interns at the Govt Ayurveda Medical College and Hospital locked hospital gates, suspending outpatient and inpatient services. These protesters sought to increase their monthly stipend from Rs 9,383 to Rs 21,500, arguing that their duties are comparable to MBBS interns despite lower pay.

In Jammu and Kashmir, following agitation and hunger strikes by MBBS and BDS interns, the government increased the monthly stipend from Rs 12,300 to Rs 25,000. This change, effective retrospectively from October 1, 2026, was implemented following intervention by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, leading interns to end their protests.
