India is advancing its indigenous shipbuilding capabilities through the development and commissioning of specialized naval vessels. In August 2026, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd launched ‘Shruti’, the second Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV). Designed for maritime surveillance, anti-piracy, and disaster relief, the vessel supports the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives. On August 31, 2026, the Indian Navy commissioned INS Nipun, its second indigenous Nistar-class Diving Support Vessel (DSV), at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. Built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited, the 119.4-metre vessel has a capacity of 10,500 tonnes and features approximately 75% indigenous content. The commissioning ceremony was presided over by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, who noted that the induction strengthens the Navy’s ability to operate in an “increasingly contested and evolving maritime environment.” INS Nipun is designed for specialized deep-sea operations, including saturation diving at depths of up to 300 metres, underwater intervention, and salvage missions using Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs). A critical capability of the vessel is its role as a mother ship for Deep Submergence Rescue Vessels (DSRV), facilitating personnel rescue from submarines during emergencies. It is also capable of being deployed for humanitarian operations and disaster relief. Alongside its sister ship, INS Nistar, the vessel strengthens India’s ability to respond to underwater contingencies and maritime disasters, potentially serving as a rescue partner for friendly navies in the Indian Ocean Region.
