The Indian Navy is preparing to induct ‘Samarthak’, an indigenous multi-purpose warship built by Larsen & Toubro Limited under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The vessel is designed for maritime surveillance, patrolling, low-intensity operations, and serving as a base for unmanned and autonomous systems. It also possesses capabilities for humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and salvage operations. On October 16, 2026, the Indian Navy officially commissioned the INS Samarthak at the Naval Base Karwar in Karnataka. The commissioning ceremony was led by Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan and Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan. The vessel features more than 75 per cent indigenous content and will serve as a platform for testing and evaluating next-generation indigenous weapons, sensors, and electronic technologies. Notably, the INS Samarthak represents the first major multi-purpose vessel commissioned by a private shipyard, having been built at the Larsen & Toubro Kattupalli shipyard.
