Indian Navy naval procurement and shipbuilding

Overview

The Indian Navy is advancing several maritime modernization initiatives. The service is developing the Project 18 Next Generation Destroyer (NGD), a large surface combatant expected to displace between 10,000 and 15,000 tonnes. This project aims to incorporate advanced capabilities such as multi-band radar systems, integrated electric propulsion, and over 140 vertical launch cells. Experts have noted that to manage costs and manpower, the NGD may require smart automation and digital ship architecture similar to the United States Navy’s Zumwalt-class.

Additionally, the Cabinet Committee on Security has approved a project valued at over Rs 40,000 crore to construct eight next-generation corvettes. These 2,000-ton vessels will use an in-house design for roles including coastal defense, surveillance, and escort operations, with the first vessel expected by 2030. Complementing these combatant programs, domestic industry has also commenced work on auxiliary vessels, such as Sullage Barges and Bottom Opening Dumb Barges, to assist with naval environmental compliance.
