Political tensions in India have escalated following controversial remarks regarding ‘regime change’. The controversy began after senior advocate Prashant Bhushan and various activists activists, including Abhijeet Dipke and Prakash Raj, asserted that seeking a change in government is a fundamental right, framing their movement within the context of ongoing protests in Delhi. These protests center on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with demonstrators demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and questioning the transparency of the Election Commission. While Congress leader P Chidambaram defended the rhetoric as a normal democratic function to ‘oppose, expose and depose’ the government, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused protesters of attempting to destabilize the nation through street mobilization. Government ministers have since intensified their criticism. Union Minister Rajnath Singh alleged that the opposition is attempting to trigger a regime change similar to the 2024 uprising in Bangladesh by using youth energy to spread anarchy. In response, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal rejected these claims, asserting that it is the Indian public, rather than the opposition, that desires a regime change. Sibal accused the current government of capturing democratic institutions and manipulating voter lists, stating it is ‘time to go’ for the ruling establishment. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju further characterized advocates of regime change as ‘traitors’, framing while Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath criticized the conflict as a struggle between constitutional supporters and anarchists. opposition's rhetoric, stating that youth should be used for nation-building rather than serving political ambitions through anarchy.
