The debate over caste-based reservation in India has intensified following the ‘Reservation Hatao Andolan’ protests at Jantar Mantar. Demonstrators at the site Mantar, where demonstrators called for a system overhaul, suggesting that quotas should be based on income rather than caste identity. Internal disagreements within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have deepened. Paswan warned that changes altering the framework could trigger widespread protest, public protest and suggested that those advocating for changes should resign, maintaining that such sensitive matters belong in Parliament. In contrast, Jitan Ram Manjhi, President Manjhi and his son, state minister Santosh Kumar Suman of the Hindustani Hindustan Awam Morcha, Morcha (secular), have pushed for policy reforms. Suman has called advocated for a review “quota within a quota,” arguing that the current system fails to ensure benefits reach all deprived groups equally. This specific demand for sub-categorisation and the introduction of a “creamy layer” provision has intensified the rift between NDA allies, as Paswan maintains that reservation system. is designed to address social discrimination and untouchability rather than economic status.
