In August 2026, Indian state food regulators intensified a coordinated crackdown on unhealthy and misleading food products. Karnataka’s Food Safety and Drug Administration maintains its ban on the sale, distribution, advertising and promotion of high‑fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) foods within school campuses and a 50‑metre perimeter. Additionally, effective 17 August, Karnataka issued a one-year ban on the manufacture, storage, distribution, and sale of analogue or non-dairy paneer marketed under the name ‘Paneer’. This action targets products replacing milk fat or solids with vegetable oils or emulsifiers. Officials noted that such products, often using palm oil to mimic dairy texture, are frequently used by hotels and restaurants as cheaper alternatives. The ban excludes standardized products like processed cheese or frozen desserts governed by separate FSSAI standards. Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration formalised its earlier order through a gazette notification signed by Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, prohibiting the manufacture, processing, storage, transport, distribution and sale of non‑dairy analogue paneer statewide for twelve months, effective 30 July. The ban follows a year‑long surveillance drive that found 35.4% of 308 paneer samples sub‑standard or unsafe. Similar restrictions on non-standardised analogue dairy were implemented in Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, and Uttarakhand. In mid-August, Madhya Pradesh authorities intensified inspections to combat ‘analog paneer’ made from vegetable ghee, starch, and palm oil. On 14 August, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) launched an inquiry into the manufacture and sale of ‘analogue paneer’, requesting clarifications from the FSSAI. On 15 August, Uttar Pradesh issued a comprehensive ban on analogue dairy products, including paneer, cream, ghee, chhena, and khoya, following reports of manufacturers using hazardous substances like detergents, talcum powder, and hydrogen peroxide to mimic dairy. To enforce this, the state authorized the seizure of products, closure of non-compliant units, and the filing of First Information Reports (FIRs).
