In Maharashtra, the state government planned to lead a delegation to the central government to demand higher minimum selling prices for sugar and fair and remunerative prices for sugarcane. Farmers sought to increase the sugar MSP from Rs 31 per kg to Rs 50 per kg and the ethanol procurement price from Rs 58 to Rs 70 per litre. Protests by the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana had already led to the suspension of work at four sugar mills in the Sangli district. In Haryana, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced a phased increase in the State Advised Price for sugarcane, rising to Rs 430 per quintal for the 2026-27 season and Rs 450 per quintal for the 2027-28 season. While the government stated this would help offset rising cultivation costs, farmers’ unions, including BKU (Charuni) and BKU (Tikait), rejected the decision as inadequate. In Karnataka, sugarcane farmers intensified protests and called for a statewide bandh, demanding Rs 5,500 per tonne. Organized groups like the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha led demonstrations that caused highway blockades and bus service interruptions in districts including Belagavi, Dharwad, Haveri, Vijayapura, and Bagalkote. In Mandya, farmers staged a black flag protest against Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, resulting in several detentions. Recent developments show Maharashtra protesters, including the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, blocking the Kini toll plaza to demand an installment of Rs 4,500 per tonne. In Belagavi, Karnataka, farmers initiated a ‘jail bharo’ movement to demand a 1,000 rupee per tonne subsidy, which would bring the total procurement price to Rs 5,500 per tonne. Police detained several leaders, including Choonappa Poojari, leading to a boycott of court proceedings by hundreds of lawyers in Belagavi. In Karnataka, farmer leader Chunnappa Pujari announced the withdrawal of protests following mediation by District In-charge Minister Satish Jaraliholi.
