Indie game developers have begun reporting extortion attempts and intellectual property risks involving generative AI. Early reports indicated developers, such as Weasel Pit, were targeted by individuals threatening to release AI-recreated clones of their games on Steam unless payments were made. In response to these threats and the potential for AI to analyze and replicate game mechanics, some studios have altered their development workflows. For example, developers in Japan have reported halting regular progress updates to prevent theft of game requirements through AI analysis. Furthermore, studios are increasingly restricting access to demos and playtests. This shift is driven by the rise of AI-assisted coding and ‘vibe-coding’—the use of text prompts to generate functional code—which allows competitors to rapidly replicate gameplay mechanics and visual styles from mere videos or short previews. Publishers like Alliance Arts and Digital Sun have cancelled or limited wide Steam releases implemented these changes. Alliance Arts recently postponed the public demo of game demos, opting instead its game, Drunken Goddess Reflex, originally intended for closed sessions via Discord. These decisions are driven by concerns that the Steam Next Fest, to prevent AI tools could be used from imitating the game’s presentation. Similarly, Digital Sun has limited playtests for its upcoming title, ReVamp, to imitate or replicate game content and mechanics well before official launches. selected Discord community members rather than a broad Steam release to mitigate the risk of reverse engineering. This move toward closed, invitation-only testing marks a significant strategic shift, as small studios prioritize security over the broad public exposure traditionally used for promotion.
