IndiGo has implemented several fee increases for its domestic flight ancillary services. These revisions include raising the charge for infants traveling on an adult’s lap from ₹2,000 to ₹3,000, increasing excess baggage fees from ₹700 to ₹800 per kilogram, and raising the cost for priority check-in and boarding from ₹450 to ₹650. While these service fee adjustments are part of a strategic effort to expand revenue through optional add-ons, the airline was also recognized at the 2026 World Airline Awards by Skytrax. IndiGo was named the ‘Best Low-Cost Airline in India & South Asia’, marking its 16th regional recognition, and received awards for ‘Best Cabin Crew’ and being the ‘Cleanest Airline’ in the region. Following these ancillary adjustments, IndiGo announced an increase in fuel surcharges for both domestic and international flights, effective October 6. The airline cited a sharp rise in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) costs—exceeding 14 per cent month-on-month—driven by global crude oil volatility and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. These costs have reportedly reached levels not seen in a decade. Domestic surcharges are tiered by distance, ranging from ₹375 for routes up to 500km to ₹1,300 for routes exceeding 2,000km. International surcharges vary by region, including ₹1,000 to ₹3,000 for SAARC routes, ₹5,500 for the Middle East and Southeast Asia, ₹6,000 for Africa, and ₹10,000 for Europe. In response to these rising costs, the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA)—representing carriers including IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet—has urged the Indian government to review the current ATF pricing formula. The FIA is advocating for a ‘Cost Plus’ model based on actual costs and reasonable margins rather than international benchmarks.
