Indonesia Academic Competency Test clarifications updates TKA purpose and scoring systems
Indonesian education officials have issued clarifications regarding the purpose of the Academic Competency Test (TKA). The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education stated that the assessment is not intended to rank students or institutions, but rather to map academic achievements and identify learning needs to improve educational quality. The results are intended to provide objective information that can validate report card grades for university selection processes. Local officials, including the Banyumas Regent, have reinforced that the TKA is a strategic instrument to evaluate literacy, numeracy, and reasoning. To prevent undue pressure on students, the National Education Board has advised parents against forcing children to attend extra tutoring centers, noting that the test is not a requirement for graduation and should not be viewed as a determinant of a student's future. In September 2026, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education announced significant changes to the TKA scoring system for high school (SMA) and vocational school (SMK) levels. Under Ministerial Decree Number 56 of 2026, the scoring range for these levels will shift from a 0–100 scale to a new range of 200–800 to provide a more accurate representation of student abilities. Conversely, the scoring system for elementary (SD) and junior high school (SMP) levels will remain on a 0–100 scale. For the 2026 cycle, SMA and SMK students must register by September 27, 2026, provided they have an active National Student Identification Number (NISN) and complete academic records from previous grades.
