Indonesia has officially commissioned its first aircraft carrier, the KRI Sriwijaya, into the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL). Formerly the Italian Navy ship ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi, the vessel arrived in Jakarta ~~following its donation by Italy, which~~ on September 18 and was ~~approved by the Italian parliament.~~ formally handed over on September 24. During a formal ceremony attended by Indonesian National Armed Forces chief General Agus Subiyanto and TNI-AL chief Admiral Muhammad Ali, the Italian naval ensign was lowered and the Indonesian flag was raised. ~~Beyond maritime defense and power projection, the vessel is intended to support Non-War Military Operations (OMSP).~~ President Prabowo Subianto has directed that the carrier be modified to support the operation of helicopters and drones to enhance its capabilities in Non-War Military Operations (OMSP), specifically focusing on disaster management and humanitarian assistance. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) noted the carrier could serve as a vital hub for logistics and search and rescue in remote areas where land access is severed. With this acquisition, Indonesia becomes the second country in Southeast Asia to operate an aircraft carrier, following Thailand. The vessel is expected to serve as a maritime operations command center and a tool for defense diplomacy. To support this transition, Fincantieri and PT PAL Indonesia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Jakarta to modernize the KRI Sriwijaya. This agreement establishes a framework for collaboration to enhance the vessel’s operational effectiveness in maritime defense, security, humanitarian assistance, and emergency management. Under the partnership, Fincantieri will utilize its original design and construction expertise to guide the modernization, while PT PAL Indonesia will provide shipbuilding, systems integration, support, and maintenance. ~~The collaboration aims to foster broader industrial cooperation between Italy and Indonesia, integrating advanced technologies to develop local maritime and defense competencies.~~
