In mid‑July 2026, Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources began a third‑stage safety trial of Red‑White 3‑kg compressed natural gas (CNG) cylinders intended to replace subsidised LPG bottles in homes. The trial, using composite Type‑4 cylinders imported from China and tested by Lemigas, focused on pressure‑strength and valve‑integration standards. Officials highlighted potential subsidy savings of up to Rp30 trillion and a price‑parity policy that would keep consumer prices equal to LPG during the rollout. By early August, Minister Bahlil Lahadalia confirmed that technical trials had entered their final phase. Lemigas was conducting high‑temperature firing tests at 850°C in both Indonesia and China to ensure safety before public introduction, which is targeted for late August 2026. These tests follow the engineering challenge of adapting CNG, which typically operates at 200–250 bar, for household use compared to LPG’s 5–10 bar. In addition to the existing Type-4 cylinder trials, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has developed low-pressure CNG technology using Metal Organic Frameworks (MOF). This technology allows for storage at approximately 30 bar, enabling a larger gas volume that could potentially extend household usage from one week to up to 15 days. The broader initiative aims to reduce Indonesia’s reliance on imported LPG by leveraging domestic natural gas supplies from recent discoveries in East Kalimantan. On August 11, Minister Bahlil Lahadalia met with Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa to discuss broader fuel subsidy reforms and state revenue. Officials noted that CNG subsidies could be “30% to 40% more efficient” than current LPG subsidies. The government is also exploring more targeted mechanisms for other fuels, such as restricting Pertalite subsidies for high-income individuals in deciles 9 and 10.
