During the 81st UN General Assembly, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono advocated for multilateral diplomacy to address the crisis in Gaza, calling for concrete international steps to secure a ceasefire, ensure humanitarian aid, and end killings in the region. Sugiono expanded this stance by urging nations to recognize Palestinian statehood to help dismantle the occupation and accelerate a two-state solution. He emphasized that lasting peace requires the restoration of dignified living conditions and the long-term reconstruction of essential infrastructure. Indonesia also expressed opposition to illegal Israeli settlement expansions, specifically citing the E1 settlement plan, and called for the protection of the legal status of holy sites in Jerusalem. In coordination meetings with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Sugiono reiterated that the organization’s primary focus remains advocating for Palestinian independence. He criticized ongoing violence in Gaza and settlement expansions in the West Bank and East Jerusalem as obstacles to peace. Sugiono called for greater accountability regarding violations of international law and proposed a ‘Peace Roadmap in Gaza’ designed to strengthen the capacity of the Palestinian government and its people to manage their own future. Expanding on these diplomatic efforts, Sugiono described the situation in Gaza and the West Bank as a “test of the international community’s conscience and the effectiveness of the multilateral system,” calling for an end to colonialism. He argued that current violations of international law mirror a pre-1945 era, undermining the UN Charter and the Geneva Conventions. Alongside his advocacy for Palestinian independence, Sugiono officially launched Indonesia’s campaign for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2029–2030 term. Running under the theme ‘Fostering Unity, Advancing Peace,’ the campaign aims to rebuild trust in multilateralism and enhance Security Council effectiveness. ~~To support humanitarian efforts, Indonesia has committed USD 1.2 million to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).~~
