Indonesia disaster mitigation and resilience initiatives corruption investigation

The Indonesian National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) has launched several initiatives to transition from reactive disaster response to preventive mitigation and community resilience. In October 2026, the BNPB promoted the InaRISK Personal platform and the Disaster History Literacy Portal. These digital tools are intended to serve as a personal risk compass and a memory library of past disasters, respectively, to help citizens and the government identify hazards and integrate safety into development planning. By November 2026, the focus expanded to regional capacity building. In Bali, the BNPB reinforced the Disaster Resilient Village and Sub-district (Destana) program through inclusive training for local officials and diverse community groups. In West Java, the agency partnered with the University of Indonesia to provide social assistance and stimulants to communities in Sukabumi, focusing on social recovery for survivors of previous land movement disasters. In early November 2026, Indonesia faced simultaneous natural disasters and forest fires. In Central Kalimantan, three Indonesian Army soldiers reportedly died during forest and land fire suppression operations, and a Mi 17V5 helicopter crashed in the Sungai Perlu waters while conducting water bombing operations near Tanjung Puting National Park. Forest fires also affected five regencies, including Pulau Taliabu, where fires spread across 13 villages. Mitigation efforts continued in other regions: authorities in Aceh Barat reinforced 15 riverbank locations with stone embankments and relocated an elementary school to higher ground, while agencies in Aceh Tengah remained on alert. In East Java, approximately 800 personnel were placed on standby in Malang to address hydrometeorological threats, and in Depok, West Java, the Indonesian National Police deployed 305 personnel, including K-9 units and horses, to prepare for floods and landslides. Concurrently, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is investigating allegations of corruption regarding the distribution of disaster preparedness funds (Dana Siap Pakai) within the BNPB.
