Indonesia’s Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has established flexible learning protocols to maintain educational continuity amidst various natural disasters, including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and forest fires. Following earthquakes in Nusa Tenggara Timur, over 171,000 students resumed learning through a mix of emergency classroom tents, distance learning, and face-to-face instruction. In response to the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, remote learning (PJJ) has been mandated across several regions to protect students from volcanic ash. In DKI Jakarta, the mandate covers all levels from PAUD to SMK. In Banten, specifically in Serang, Lebak, and Tangerang Selatan, schools have shifted to remote formats. While eruption intensity has decreased, the volcano remains at Alert Level III with a 3-kilometer exclusion zone. This volcanic activity has contributed to a surge in Acute Respiratory Infection (ISPA) cases in Banten, rising from approximately 2,000 to 4,500 cases. Consequently, Governor Andra Soni has extended remote learning for SMA, SMK, and SKH levels in Banten until September 11, 2026. In Tangerang Regency and Tangerang City, local governments have also implemented or extended distance learning to mitigate ash exposure. In Cilegon, some areas have begun transitioning back to face-to-face classes as of September 9, with officials mandating the sterilization of environments from ash residue. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) continues to advise residents to stay at least 3 kilometers from the eruption site and wear masks. Simultaneously, authorities are addressing air quality issues caused by forest and land fires. In Riau, Pekanbaru has implemented remote learning for PAUD through SMP levels. In Palangka Raya, remote learning remains in effect as the Air Pollution Standard Index (ISPU) stays above 200. Additionally, Padang City has mandated remote learning for preschool, elementary, and junior high students from September 9 to 11, 2026, after the local ISPU reached a dangerous level of 332 due to high PM2.5 concentrations. To manage dust and ash, authorities in Tangerang Selatan and Jakarta have deployed personnel to spray roads.
